The Yonkers Christian Assembly is asking state officials for permission to sell its parsonage.
The church at 229 N. Broadway bought a property at 14 Greenvale Ave. in 1980 that it used for worship, as a residence for the pastor and as a school until 1984, when the church moved to its current location.
Since that time the building has only been used as a residence for the pastor, but the congregation now wants to sell the home to pay off debts, according to the church‘s court papers filed Oct. 29 in the state Supreme Court.
The church‘s debt includes a tax lien by the Internal Revenue Service for unpaid withholding taxes totaling $165,000 related to a church-run academy that operated from 1986 until 2017.
The Greenvale Avenue property is proposed to be sold for $395,000 to Yesenia Ortiz-Dice and Robert Dice, according to court papers.
Churches must get permission from the courts and the state Attorney General because they are nonprofit organizations and state officials want to ensure that the proceeds from the sale of property will be used to advance the nonprofit‘s mission or for a similar charitable purpose.
The pastor will receive a housing allowance from the church to make up for the lost parsonage.
