Take a tour of Yonkers’ proposed rail trail

Groundwork Hudson Valley will give a free walking tour of Yonkers‘ proposed rail trail on Sunday.

The nonprofit group and the City of Yonkers are working on converting to a trail the former New York and Putnam Railroad spur that once ran from Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to Getty Square.

Sunday‘s tour will explore the proposed rail trail‘s southern portion. The three-hour tour starts at 2 p.m. on Caryl Avenue between Elinor Place and Saratoga Avenue.

In May, officials announced a $3.3 million grant for the project.

The Transportation Alternatives Program grant from the New York state Department of Transportation will be used to build the rail trail, which will convert the abandoned spur of the Putnam line into a 2.2-mile biking and walking trail through the heart of southwest Yonkers.

According to Groundwork Hudson Valley, bid requests have been issued by the city for the construction of a trail-related playground at Wolffe Street.

The Greenway’s three phases are estimated to cost $5.1 million when completed, including $800,000 funded by Yonkers.

From 1888-1943, the Yonkers branch of the Putnam line connected Yonkers‘ Getty Square to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
