PROJECT: The former Pathmark at 2500 Central Park Ave. in the Yonkers Gateway Center closed in 2015 as part of the A&P supermarket chain‘s bankruptcy. Still empty, the 49,817-square-foot space is currently on the rental market.
LOCATION: The supermarket is in the back of an otherwise bustling strip mall that includes Best Buy, Burlington Coat Factory, PetSmart and the Alamo cinema. The site‘s drawback is that it is not visible to passing traffic on Central Park Avenue.
MOST RECENT PROPOSAL: In early 2016, Floor & Decor Outlets of America Inc. submitted an application to the Yonkers Planning Board proposing a $2.2 million conversion. The idea was to build an 11,282-square-foot-addition in the rear of the existing building. However, the flooring retailer did not follow up with planning officials and the proposal fizzled. Since then another large flooring retailer, , opened in July at Westchester‘s Ridge Hill mall.
UP NEXT: The empty space is currently marketed by Urban Edge Properties of New York City. Officials at the real estate firm did not respond to voice and email requests for comment about the status of the former supermarket. On its website, touts the area as having an average household income of $147,133 within a one-mile radius of the supermarket site.
KEY DATES: Competition for attracting a replacement supermarket increased in the past year. In April, the specialty supermarket opened in a former Pathmark at the Highridge Plaza at 1789 Central Park Ave. in Yonkers. In September, the at 381 N. Central Ave. in Hartsdale closed its location, citing an unsatisfactory sales results. In November, 2016, closed two underperforming locations in Rye and Tarrytown after the company experienced stock disruptions that left shelves empty in some of its stores.
