Uncounted ballots could decide a Yonkers City Council race whose candidates are six votes apart.
Unofficial returns Tuesday night gave Republican Anthony Merante a six-vote lead over Democrat Matt Orefice in the Sixth District race.
“From what I‘m told it‘s going to take up to a week to figure out,” Orefice said Wednesday.
Orefice was referring to absentee ballots, which under New York voting rules can arrive at the Board of Elections until Tuesday if they they are postmarked by Nov. 6.
But Merante said few, if any, will arrive in the mail by Tuesday.
“As far as I know all the absentee (ballots) are accounted for,” Merante said.
The Westchester County Board of Elections commissioners did not respond to a request for comment about the race‘s absentee ballots.
Both candidates said that the Board of Elections will meet on Wednesday to sort out the vote.
