A Democrat unseated a longtime county legislator in Yonkers

Ruth Walter ran on the Democratic Party line against longtime incumbent Gordon Burrows, who ran on four party lines.

She faced an uphill battle in an off-season election and flipped the seat with just 202 votes.

She says her ability to connect with constituents across socioeconomic backgrounds helped her succeed.

After unseating the candidate who held that position for 14 years, she says now it’s time to get to work.

She’s already got a few things on her to-do list, starting with finding inexpensive flood solutions in susceptible areas.

Walter says she also has low-cost ideas on how to push the state government for upgrades in Yonkers and Bronxville schools.

Walter says she will continue to work at her small business while promising to make way for other local shops in the district.

After her swearing-in, Walter will serve for a term of two years.
