This evening our Jewish community celebrates the first night of Hanukkah, the eight day “festival of lights” celebrating the reclamation, cleansing and rededication of the Second Temple following the Maccabean Revolt, and the miracle of light over darkness which we recognize with the lighting of the Menorah.
As families across the world gather to observe the many traditions of Hanukkah during this joyous time, we also reflect on Hanukkah’s spirit of hope. An inspirational reminder to us all of the power of human spirit, faith and our ability to overcome the greatest challenges we face. That’s the inspiration behind the progress we’re making as one city, united for a better Yonkers.
I encourage all residents to enjoy the great Hanukkah festivities taking place around Yonkers and invite you to join me on Wednesday, December 4th at 4pm for a Hanukkah celebration at City Hall.
I wish all observing a very Happy Hanukkah!
Sincerely,
MIKE SPANO
Mayor
