HUDSON VALLEY:state report from December 2019 found that about 80% of teachers across New York were white.

School districts are becoming more aggressive about seeking diverse candidates, rather than posting jobs and focusing on those who apply, Ladewig said.

The Lower Hudson Council of School Personnel Administrators held its first virtual job fair last year because of the pandemic, and was able to reach candidates from as far as Singapore.

Districts hired 23 people last year who they met through the job fair.

Ladewig noted that organizers have not defined what they mean by diversity. He said they hope to attract not only Black and brown educators, but those with disabilities, those from the LGBTQ community, and others.

“We’ve allowed candidates to define how they are diverse,” he said….
